Course Description

This independent study course covers basic principles of density, specific gravity, and pressure of liquids and gases. It covers how to identify manometers and use them correctly, the concept of force per unit area, hydrostatic pressure, pounds per square foot, pounds per square inch and feet of liquid. It also teaches how to identify the different types of manometers including U-tube, inclined tube and well-type manometers and how to read their scales. It covers principles of differential pressure, density and specific gravity. It also covers manometer liquids, barometers; and the components, care, installation and operation of manometers.

Independent study course lessons and exercises are contained in the “Pressure and Its Measurement Workbook” which is mailed to students upon registration for the course. Course lessons and exercises are completed in preparation for the final exam. Students completing all course requirements and earning a minimum final exam score of 70% are awarded an official Certificate of Completion.

Complete all of the workbook assignments before completing the written final exam then mail the exam and other required materials back to SkillWorks for grading. Returned course materials are promptly graded within one business day of arrival. Your exam results and Certificate of Completion are promptly shipped back after grading.

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe basic principles of density, specific gravity, and pressure of liquids and gases
  • Identify U-tube, well-type and inclined tube manometers, liquids, scales, and their proper use
  • Solve problems using hydrostatic pressure, pounds per square foot and inch, feet of liquid
  • Explain density and specific gravity

Registration for this course entitles the student to course support from SkillWorks. After passing the final exam the registered student will also receive an official Continuing Education Course Certificate of Completion that will be accepted by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) for operator certification renewal for the licenses listed in the table of course details above.
